WE YOUTH
BRAZIL-UK YOUTH CUSTODY ART COLLABORATION
to be exhibited at THE NATIONAL JUSTICE MUSEUM & HMYOI WETHERBY (UK) & PINACOTECA DE São PAULO & FUNDACãO CASA (Brazil)
IN Partnership with NOVUS and Pinacoteca de São Paulo with support from Fundação CASA, HMPPS and YCS
funded by Arts Council England
We Youth is the first ever international art collaboration and exhibition tour made in UK and Brazilian youth custody. Young participants aged 12-18 years old are working with professional artists and art teachers to produce extraordinary artworks exploring their experiences and aspirations.
Children and teens in São Paulo, Brazil, and Wetherby, UK, are working together remotely to develop ideas and respond to each other’s’ artworks in a creative conversation. The resulting co-produced exhibition will be showcased at both UK and Brazilian youth custody sites and exhibited in major art galleries: the National Justice Museum, UK, and the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Brazil. A bilingual publication, symposium and virtual exhibition will further extend its accessibility impact.
The pioneering project sits within established wider education programmes and aims to foster essential team-building and social skills whilst inspiring creativity and ambition. Its production and public presentations will help to build crucial relationships and provide the opportunity for seldom-seen young people to represent their unique world views and talents.
The young participants in We Youth will defy expectations with their creative responses to this ground-breaking opportunity. It will be hugely beneficial for participants’ self-esteem and mental health wellbeing, and incredibly inspiring for the public who very rarely get to see art from youth custody.
